Ne Ma is a doctoral researcher at the Leeds University Business School, affiliated with the Centre for Employment Relations, Innovation and Change. They hold a BSc in Accounting and Finance from the University of Exeter and an MSc in Marketing and Management from Loughborough University. Prior to academia, Ne worked in China's pharmaceutical industry.
Ne's research focuses on gender expectations and their impact on professional identities, particularly among unmarried, childfree Chinese women in China and the UK. Key interests include (expected) motherhood penalties, singlism, and the interplay between social media and feminist movements in China.
Teaching responsibilities include seminars for LUBS1755 and LUBS1760 Business and Society courses. Ne has presented at conferences such as BUIRA 2023, SASE 2023, and Work Employment and Society in Glasgow, exploring themes of professional identity negotiation among single working women through an intersectional lens.
A 2023 publication in Futures of Work critiques societal and workplace framing of female singlehood in China, linking it to broader structural inequalities. Ne actively engages with academics, researchers, and activists through their university email: bnnm@leeds.ac.uk.
