Nazanin Hedayat Munroe is an Associate Professor and Director of Textiles in Business & Technology of Fashion at New York City College of Technology (City Tech), part of the City University of New York (CUNY). She also serves as Faculty Director of Interdisciplinary Programming at the CUNY Academy for the Humanities and Sciences. Her academic career includes roles as a textile specialist and educator at The Metropolitan Museum of Art from 2011 to 2016.
Her research focuses on early modern Persianate silks and fashion, blending art history with cultural analysis. She has authored influential books such as Sufi Lovers, Safavid Silks and Early Modern Identity (2023), which earned the Henry Wasser Award, and A Cultural History of Western Fashion (2022). Her work examines cross-cultural exchanges, material culture, and the socio-economic dimensions of textile production and fashion industries.
Her publications span textile museum journals and industry-focused research, emphasizing interdisciplinary approaches. Beyond academia, her artistic installations explore textile-based narratives, displayed in museum exhibitions and galleries. She actively addresses contemporary issues in the fashion industry through writings on skilled immigrant labor and global textile practices.
Her awards highlight her contributions to textile scholarship, with recognition for groundbreaking research in cultural studies.
