Dr Naveed Alam is a Lecturer in Civil Engineering at Ulster University, conducting research at the Fire Safety Engineering Research Technology Centre (FireSERT). He is affiliated with the Belfast School of Architecture & the Built Environment and has been teaching structural engineering courses since 2020.
Dr Alam's educational background includes:
- PhD in Response of Slim Floor Systems in Fire from Ulster University (awarded 2019)
- MEng in Civil (Structural) Engineering from NED University of Engineering and Technology (awarded 2012)
- BEng in Civil Engineering from Balochistan University of Engineering and Technology, Khuzdar (awarded 2008)
Dr Alam specializes in structural fire engineering, structural earthquake engineering, and green construction techniques. His research focuses on understanding how structures behave under extreme conditions, particularly fires and earthquakes. He has extensive expertise in studying slim floor systems, travelling fires, and the fire performance of innovative construction materials including recycled concrete and timber structures. Dr Alam's work contributes significantly to improving building safety standards and developing more sustainable construction practices that align with UN Sustainable Development Goals.
Dr Alam's recent publications demonstrate a strong focus on travelling fires in large compartments, structural response under fire conditions, and innovative approaches to fire-resistant construction. His research combines experimental work with advanced computational modeling to better understand fire dynamics and structural behavior. A notable trend in his work is the integration of machine learning techniques with traditional fire engineering approaches to improve prediction accuracy.
Dr Alam has received several prestigious awards for his contributions to the field:
- Outstanding Reviewer (2019)
- Literati Awards 2020 Highly Commended (2020)
- Outstanding Paper Award (2022)
- Reviewer Certificate (2021)
- Best Thesis in Unit of Assessment (2020)
Dr Alam is actively involved in multiple research projects including numerical modeling of wall systems under fire conditions, investigating self-healing concrete properties at high temperatures, and analyzing precast concrete sandwich panels. His research collaborations span across Europe, Africa, and Asia, reflecting the international recognition of his expertise in structural fire engineering.
Based at FireSERT, Dr Alam works within a multidisciplinary team that conducts cutting-edge fire safety research using state-of-the-art facilities for both experimental and computational investigations. His work contributes to developing safer building designs and more resilient infrastructure.
