Dr. Nava Panitz-Cohen is a Researcher and lecturer at the Institute of Archaeology of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. She serves as editor of the Qedem Monograph series of the Institute of Archaeology and the Israel Exploration Journal of the Israel Exploration Society.
Dr. Panitz-Cohen earned her Ph.D. in archaeology from the Institute of Archaeology of The Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Her academic background focuses on archaeological methodology and ceramic analysis within Near Eastern contexts.
Her research specializes in Bronze and Iron Age ceramics and ceramic technology, with particular emphasis on connecting archaeological findings with biblical textual references. Dr. Panitz-Cohen's work bridges material culture analysis and textual studies to illuminate daily life practices in ancient Israelite society, particularly regarding domestic activities and food preparation.
Analysis of her publications reveals consistent focus on ceramic vessel typology and function within biblical contexts, demonstrating how material culture can provide concrete evidence for interpreting biblical narratives about daily life. Her research particularly emphasizes the technological aspects of ancient pottery production and usage.
Dr. Panitz-Cohen has extensive field experience, having excavated with Prof. Amihai Mazar at Tel Batash, Tel Beth Shean, and Tel Rehov. She has participated in the publication of final excavation reports for these significant archaeological sites, contributing her ceramic expertise to comprehensive site interpretations.
Currently, she co-directs the excavations at Tel Abel Beth-Maacah in northern Israel, an important site mentioned in 2 Samuel 20:14-22. This ongoing project investigates the cultural and political dynamics of this border region throughout multiple historical periods, with particular attention to ceramic evidence for cultural interactions.
