Nathaniel Winstead is a Lecturer at Johns Hopkins University, affiliated with the Krieger School of Arts and Sciences (Environmental Sciences and Policy program) and the Whiting School of Engineering (Applied Physics Program). He also serves as a Principal Staff Scientist at the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (JHU/APL), where his 20-year career focuses on atmospheric and oceanic modeling, numerical weather prediction, and remote sensing.
- Education: BS in Mathematics (Duke University), MS and PhD in Meteorology (Pennsylvania State University).
His research spans Energy Policy, Environmental Studies, and Geographic Information Systems (GIS), with expertise in mesoscale meteorology, dust transport modeling, and high-resolution wind speed estimation using Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR). He co-developed the Dust Transport Application (DTA), a dust forecasting model used operationally by the U.S. Air Force in Iraq and Afghanistan.
