Nathaniel Mackey is the Reynolds Price Distinguished Professor of Creative Writing and Professor of English at Duke University's Trinity College of Arts & Sciences since 2011. His academic career includes a visiting professorship in 2010. He holds a Ph.D. from Stanford University (1975) and an A.B. from Princeton University (1969).
Mackey's research focuses on modern/postmodern literature, creative writing, poetry, and the intersection of literature with music. His works blend experimental poetics with jazz aesthetics, serial narratives, and cross-cultural mythologies. Key themes include identity, spirituality, historical trauma, and improvisation.
