John Scrimgeour is a Professor in the Department of English at Salem State University, where he also serves as Coordinator of Creative Writing and Director of the Salem Poetry Seminar. He holds a BA/MA in English from Columbia University and an MFA in Poetry plus a PhD in American Literature from Indiana University.
His research spans poetry, creative nonfiction, and interdisciplinary collaborations, with thematic focuses on American/African American literature, sports narratives, and memoir. He has published five poetry collections and two award-winning nonfiction books, alongside musical collaborations like Confluence (nominated for a Grammy) and theater productions such as Only Human.
Awards include the AWP Creative Nonfiction Award, National Society of Arts and Letters recognition, and a Massachusetts Cultural Council grant finalist distinction. He organizes symposia on jazz, education, and creative processes, and founded the Salem Writers' Group.
