Jerald Walker is a Professor of Creative Writing and African American Literature at Emerson College. He is the author of two memoirs and the essay collection How to Make a Slave and Other Essays (2020), which was a National Book Award Finalist in Nonfiction. His work has been published in prestigious journals such as the Harvard Review, Creative Nonfiction, The Iowa Review, and Mother Jones, and anthologized five times in The Best American Essays series.
His research and writing focus on creative nonfiction, African American literary traditions, and memoir as a form of cultural and personal narrative. He has participated in academic events like the Postgraduate Writers' Conference and has been associated with visiting writers programs at institutions like VCFA.
