Nathaniel Isaacson is an Associate Professor in the Department of World Languages and Cultures at North Carolina State University. He specializes in Modern Chinese literature and cultural studies, with a focus on science fiction, transnational Chinese cinemas, and popular culture. He directs the Chinese Language Program and advises the Asian Language track major. Isaacson has held roles on the World Literature Committee and Asian Studies Committee at NC State since 2011.
His research explores intersections between science, technology, and cultural identity in Chinese contexts. Notable topics include the history of Chinese science fiction, late Qing print culture, and socialist-era cinema. Isaacson has published widely in journals like Science Fiction Studies and Osiris, and his book Celestial Empire: The Emergence of Chinese Science Fiction (2017) is a seminal work in the field. He also translates and edits Chinese SF texts, including works by Han Song and Liu Cixin.
Recent projects include editing Chinese Science Fiction: Concepts, Forms, and Histories (forthcoming 2024), analyzing transnational collaborations in Sinophone cinema, and examining developmental aesthetics in late Qing visual culture. Isaacson has presented at international conferences such as MLA and the University of Cambridge, and held fellowships including the National Humanities Center Summer Fellowship (2018).
