Nathaniel Frederick II is an Associate Professor of Mass Communication and Department Chair at the College of Arts and Sciences, Winthrop University. He has been affiliated with Winthrop since 2011, after teaching at Pennsylvania State University, PennWest California, and Claflin University.

His research focuses on the intersection of media, cultural production, and social protest in the 20th century. He has contributed to refereed journals and edited volumes, including co-editing Media Ethics at Work: True Stories from Young Professionals (3rd ed., Great River Learning, 2021).
Dr. Frederick has received recognition for his work, including awards from the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication (AEJMC) and the American Journalism Historians Association (AJHA). He has also secured multiple fellowships from the Scripps Howard Foundation, culminating in his selection for the Scripps Howard Leadership Academy and the AEJMC Institute for Diverse Leadership in 2023.
He has served as an advisor to the Winthrop University Association of Black Journalists and the Roddey McMillan Record, the university’s multicultural student newspaper. His teaching expertise spans media history, media law, media entrepreneurship, media literacy, and representations of minorities in media.
