Witkamp's research centers on Early Christian baptismal rites, particularly examining Theodore of Mopsuestia and Narsai of Nisibis through comparative liturgical analysis. His work bridges Syriac Christianity with broader patristic studies, investigating how initiation practices reflected theological innovation within apostolic tradition. Recent publications demonstrate growing engagement with digital humanities through translation databases for Greek and Early Christian Latin texts.
His scholarly output reveals consistent focus on mystagogy (post-baptismal instruction), liturgical symbolism, and the interplay between Jewish and Christian initiation traditions. The 2023 publication on Aphrahat's Demonstrations exemplifies his methodological approach combining textual analysis with ritual studies.
- Research fellow, Netherlands Center for Patristic Research (CPO; VU/TiU) since 2015
- Fellow and board member (since 2018), Foundation for Early Christian Studies
- Regular reviewer for Journal of Theological Studies and other patristics journals
As Academic Dean at the Evangelical Theological Academy, Witkamp oversees curriculum development while maintaining active research collaboration with institutions including Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. His current projects integrate digital tools with traditional patristic scholarship, particularly through the Greek and Early Christian Latin translation databases developed with colleagues Ceulemans and Dijkstra.
