Nathan Sanders is a data scientist and Faculty Associate at Harvard University's Berkman Klein Center for Internet & Society, where he focuses on creating open technology to help vulnerable communities and stakeholders participate in public policy analysis and development. His work bridges the gap between technical AI development and democratic governance, with a particular emphasis on ensuring that AI serves public interests rather than corporate ones.
Sanders holds a PhD in Astronomy and Astrophysics from Harvard University and completed his undergraduate work in Physics and Astrophysics at Michigan State University. His early career included founding Astrobites, a platform for graduate student science communication in astrophysics, which later expanded to ScienceBites, a multi-lingual network of science writing collaboratives.
As a Berkman Klein Center Fellow in 2020-2021, Sanders helped create the Harvard Climate Justice Design Fellowship program and the Massachusetts Platform for Legislative Engagement (MAPLE). His research interests span artificial intelligence, public policy, democratic governance, and civic technology. He has built and led data science teams in industry at Legendary Pictures, WarnerMedia, Flagship Pioneering, and Harvard Business Publishing, developing methods in Bayesian inference, natural language processing, computer vision, and deep learning.
Sanders has published extensively on the intersection of AI and democracy, with recent articles examining how AI could transform legislative processes, democratic engagement, and public policy. His work analyzes both the risks and opportunities presented by AI in governance, with particular attention to preventing corporate capture of AI systems and ensuring they serve public interests. He has co-authored numerous influential pieces with Bruce Schneier, including the forthcoming book "Rewiring Democracy: How AI Will Transform Our Politics, Government, and Citizenship" (MIT Press, 2025).
Among his notable scientific contributions are the development of statistical methods for public health analysis modeling long-term trends in mass public shootings and the creation of open-source applications for participatory oversight of environmental regulation. Sanders has also served as a science policy fellow in the Massachusetts Senate and House of Representatives, bringing technical expertise to legislative processes.
Sanders is a co-founder of several influential science communication initiatives, including Astrobites (the astrophysical literature digest), ScienceBites (the multi-lingual association of graduate student science writing collaboratives), and the international science communication workshop series ComSciCon. His early career included significant contributions to open source software communities, with writings about KDE, Linux, and other open technologies.
