Nathan Niemi is the Henry Pollack Professor and Camp Davis Director in the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences at the University of Michigan, affiliated with the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts (LSA). He holds a Ph.D. in Geology from the California Institute of Technology (2001). His research focuses on continental deformation, tectonics, and crustal dynamics, with expertise in structural geology, geomorphology, thermochronology, and geodesy. Key projects include studies of actively deforming regions such as the Greater Caucasus, Tibetan Plateau, and Basin and Range Province, emphasizing integration of field data, geochronology, and geophysical methods.
His work explores how tectonic processes shape landscapes over timescales from decades to millions of years, with particular attention to mountain-building, paleotopography, and the interplay between tectonics and climate. He directs Camp Davis, a renowned field camp for training geology students, and has been recognized as a 2019 AAAS Fellow for contributions to tectonic science and education. His lab, the Thermochronology Lab, specializes in low-temperature thermochronometry and sediment provenance analysis.
Notable achievements include advancing understanding of Tibetan Plateau uplift, Caucasus tectonics, and the geologic impacts of catastrophic dam failures. He collaborates on interdisciplinary projects linking tectonic activity to biodiversity patterns and human infrastructure resilience. His teaching and mentorship emphasize hands-on fieldwork and quantitative methods in geology.
