Nathan M. Kathir is an Associate Professor and Director of Senior Projects in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at George Mason University's College of Engineering and Computing. With over 35 years of experience in civil and structural engineering, he transitioned to academia after a distinguished career in government service, including roles supporting the White House. He plays a key role in accreditation, capstone education, and student project mentorship.

Dr. Kathir’s research focuses on critical infrastructure protection, risk evaluation, security engineering, and facilities management. His work integrates probabilistic modeling, vulnerability assessments, and mitigation strategies for high-value and high-risk infrastructure. He has led numerous risk and security assessments and applies his expertise to both academic instruction and national standards.
His professional contributions include extensive service with ABET, where he has evaluated over 25 engineering programs globally. He currently serves as a commissioner on ABET’s Engineering Accreditation Commission and is an active member of the American Society of Civil Engineers’ Committee on Accreditation.

Dr. Kathir advises students in the senior design capstone program, guiding them through real-world engineering challenges in planning, design, manufacturing, and project management. His leadership ensures students gain comprehensive, hands-on experience prior to graduation.
He is actively involved in engineering education reform and standards development through his ABET and ASCE roles, contributing to the advancement of engineering curricula and assessment practices nationwide.
