Nathan Kalmoe is Executive Administrative Director of the Center for Communication and Civic Renewal and Research Professor at the School of Journalism and Mass Communication, University of Wisconsin–Madison. He holds a PhD in Political Science from the University of Michigan (2012) and previously served as Associate Professor and Interim Associate Dean at Louisiana State University's Manship School of Communication. His research examines political communication in contentious environments, with focus on partisan violence, ideology, and democratic challenges.
Kalmoe has authored three books including 'Radical American Partisanship: Mapping Violent Hostility, its Causes, and the Consequences for Democracy' (University of Chicago Press, 2022) and 'With Ballots & Bullets: Partisanship & Violence in the American Civil War' (Cambridge University Press), the latter receiving two book awards. His work on political aggression and media effects has been featured in leading outlets including the New York Times and National Review.
His current research analyzes how communication ecologies influence political behavior in polarized societies, with particular attention to Wisconsin's political landscape. Beyond academia, he enjoys rock climbing, disc golf, and music composition.
