Nathan Howe is Associate Professor and Department Head of the Department of Interior Architecture and Industrial Design at Kansas State University's College of Architecture, Planning and Design (APDesign). He has been a faculty member since 2005 and was tenured in 2014. His leadership since 2017 has shaped the direction of IAID, integrating architecture, industrial design, and digital innovation.
Howe holds a Bachelor of Architecture from Kansas State University and a Master of Architecture from the University of Texas at Austin. He previously taught at the University of Nebraska and assisted design studios at UT Austin.
His research centers on parametric modeling, algorithmic design, and design communication, exploring how digital tools transform architectural and industrial design processes. He investigates contemporary form types and design representation through creative and experimental projects.
His creative work includes internationally recognized design-build projects such as Fluidscape, V.E.I.L.S., and SpiderLace, exhibited in the U.S. and Australia. These projects reflect a strong emphasis on performance, materiality, and public engagement.
Notable recognitions include:
- Juror's Choice, Design Communications Association 2014 Faculty Design Awards
- Winner, International Competition for Seger Park Water Scape, Philadelphia (2011)
- Finalist, Built Environment Competition, Sydney Design Exposition (2011)
Howe has advised and led student teams in design-build initiatives, fostering applied learning and interdisciplinary collaboration. Though specific grants are not listed, his competitive successes and funded projects like Fluidscape suggest active external engagement and project-based funding. He continues to expand the relevance of design within furniture, industrial design, and urban contexts.
He leads and mentors within a vibrant design research environment, integrating technology, pedagogy, and creative practice.
