Nathan Grove is a Teaching Professor in the Department of Chemistry at Pennsylvania State University, with a secondary role as Associate Director of the Grove Center for Excellence in Science Education. His work focuses on chemistry education research, particularly cognitive load theory and its applications in STEM learning environments. He holds a B.S. in Chemistry and Secondary Education from the University of Pittsburgh (2003), an M.S. in Chemistry from Youngstown State University (2005), and a Ph.D. in Chemistry from Miami University (2008). He completed a postdoctoral fellowship at Clemson University (2008–2010).
Dr. Grove’s research integrates educational, psychological, and physiological methods to study how cognitive load impacts student learning in chemistry. His lab explores real-time measurement of cognitive load using wireless technologies to track metrics like heart rate and brain activity. Recent work emphasizes the cognitive challenges posed by organic chemistry topics and the design of effective educational tools to mitigate overload.
His publications span 2015–2024, focusing on cognitive load in chemical education, the impact of digital tools on learning, and physiological correlates of student learning. He actively collaborates with institutions nationwide and welcomes inquiries about participation in his research.
