Nathan Fiala is an Associate Professor at the University of Connecticut's Department of Agricultural & Resource Economics, within the College of Agriculture, Health and Natural Resources. He also holds roles as an Honorary Senior Lecturer at Makerere University (Uganda) and a Research Fellow at RWI (Germany). His expertise spans Development Economics, Food Security, Environmental Policy, and Political Economy. He earned his Ph.D. in Economics from the University of California, Irvine (2009), following an M.A. in Mathematical Behavioral Sciences (2006) and a B.S. in Economics (2003) from Arizona State University.
His research focuses on household bargaining, micro-enterprise development, and anti-corruption programming, primarily in sub-Saharan Africa and Asia. He employs randomized control trials and lab-in-the-field experiments, with notable work in Uganda, Kenya, India, and Rwanda.
His articles emphasize experimental methodologies and long-term impacts of development interventions. Recent work explores cash grants during crises, energy efficiency rebound effects, and gender-based violence in urban areas. Media outlets like The New York Times and The Economist have highlighted his research.
Dr. Fiala consults for organizations such as the World Bank and Green Climate Fund and has contributed to policy evaluations in multiple African nations. His teaching includes courses on impact evaluation, microeconomics, and data ethics.
