Nathan Chasen is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Biology at the University of South Alabama's College of Arts and Sciences. His office is located in ELSB 123, and he can be contacted at (251) 460-7533 or nchasen@southalabama.edu.
His educational background includes:
- Ph.D. in Infectious Diseases from the University of Georgia (2017)
- B.S. in Biology from Emory University (2009)
Dr. Chasen's research focuses on host-pathogen interactions with Trypanosoma cruzi, the causative agent of Chagas disease. His laboratory investigates how this parasite survives in the host cytosol by studying nutrient acquisition mechanisms and immune evasion strategies. Key research areas include endocytosis, protein secretion pathways, and proteomic analysis of host-parasite interfaces.
He teaches undergraduate courses including BLY 121L (General Biology 1 Lab) and BLY 302 (Genetics). Dr. Chasen actively recruits MS students for his research group, which examines how T. cruzi manipulates host cells to prevent detection while residing directly in the cytosol—a unique survival strategy among intracellular parasites. His work addresses a major public health challenge as Chagas disease affects millions across the Americas and causes cardiac complications in 20-30% of chronic cases.
