His academic background includes a PhD in Music Education from Temple University, an MM in Percussion Performance from Southern Methodist University, and a BME in Music Education from Susquehanna University.
His research centers on aural skills pedagogy, with significant publications examining melodic and rhythmic dictation techniques, technology integration in music instruction, and jazz education methodologies. Buonviri has authored two influential books—Building Better Dictation Skills (2015) and The Subtle Side of Teaching (2019)—and published extensively in journals including the Journal of Research in Music Education and Update: Applications of Research in Music Education.
Analysis of his 15 most recent publications reveals a sustained focus on empirical approaches to aural skills development, particularly investigating how technology, singing interventions, and alternative teaching strategies impact student outcomes in music theory instruction. His work consistently addresses practical challenges faced by educators through evidence-based solutions while advancing theoretical understanding of music cognition.
Beyond scholarship, Buonviri maintains an active performance career as a percussionist with the Utah Festival Opera and previously with the Dallas Symphony Orchestra and Empire Brass. His compositional output includes chamber works premiered internationally, demonstrating his commitment to both the theoretical and practical dimensions of music education.
