Nathalie Japkowicz is Professor and former Chair of Computer Science at American University, specializing in machine learning with applications to cybersecurity and social media analysis. She directs research on lifelong learning systems, anomaly detection, and hate speech monitoring, with funding from DARPA, NSERC, and Health Canada.
Her work addresses challenges in high-dimensional sparse data, evolutionary learning systems, and ethical AI. Recent publications explore continual anomaly detection frameworks and multimodal hate speech detection in memes.
Recipient of multiple best paper awards including ECML's Test of Time Award (2014) and Canadian AI Distinguished Service Award (2021). Authored Evaluating Learning Algorithms (Cambridge, 2011) and Machine Learning Evaluation: Towards Reliable and Responsible AI (Cambridge, 2024).
