Nate Palmer is a Lecturer in International Environmental Law at the School of Law, Gender and Media, SOAS, University of London. He is a member of the Law Environment and Development Centre, the Centre for Water and Development, and the United Nations Harmony with Nature Programme as an Expert Member. He serves as an Assistant Editor for the Law, Environment, and Development (LEAD) Journal.
Education: BA in International Studies (City College of New York CUNY) with minors in Development and Public Policy; MA in Environmental Law and Sustainable Development (SOAS, University of London) with high distinction. Current PhD research focuses on water governance in India through a rights-of-nature framework, supervised by Professors Philippe Cullet and Izabela Delabre.
Research interests include non-anthropocentric legal frameworks for water governance, rights of nature, environmental justice, and the intersection of law and biodiversity crises. He coordinates the SOAS Environmental Policy Clinic, collaborating with NGOs on projects like 'Representing Rights of Nature,' and co-convenes courses on alternatives to sustainable development and biodiversity law.
Awards include the Bloomsbury PhD Studentship and recognition for his MA dissertation on global rights-of-nature frameworks. He previously worked with the New York Public Interest Research Group on environmental advocacy and founded the SOAS Harmony with Nature Society.
