Natasha Simon, an l’nu from Elsipogtog Mi’kmaq community, serves as Nihkanatpat (Director) of the Mi’kmaq-Wolastoqey Centre and Assistant Professor in UNB’s Faculty of Education. She teaches courses on Indigenous pedagogies and the history of Indigenous education.
Her research centers on Mi’kmaq cultural heritage, particularly migatju’aq (grandmothers), Chignecto as a historical gathering place, and systemic racism in criminal justice. Key projects include the Parks Canada exhibition Revealing Chignecto: The Stories Within and a symposium on re-centering Peace and Friendship Treaties.
She actively contributes to Indigenous education through committee work:
- New Brunswick Treaty Education Curriculum Committee
- New Brunswick Cross-Cultural Course Development Committee
- Confederacy of Mainland Mi’kmaq Digital Portal Research Group
Her career includes securing community grants for Elsipogtog School’s library and managing the Aotitj (First-Year-At-Home) Program at St. Thomas University.
