Natasha Mitchell is a Research Fellow (Trial Manager) in the Health Sciences department at the University of York. She joined the department in 2005 as a Research Assistant working on Department of Health funded projects, then joined York Trial Unit (YTU) in 2007 as a Trial Coordinator, taking up Trial Manager responsibilities from 2013. With nearly two decades of experience, she has managed over a dozen large-scale studies utilizing systematic reviews, questionnaires, qualitative methods, and randomized controlled trials.
Dr. Mitchell holds a PhD from the University of Sheffield (funded by ESRC), an MSc in Health Psychology from University College London (funded by MRC), and a BSc in Human Psychology from De Montfort University. She has served on the Contract Researchers Forum (2016-2020) and the Health Sciences Honorary Appointments Sub Group (2019-2024), demonstrating her active role in departmental governance.
Her research focuses on recruitment to randomized controlled trials, trial design methodology, qualitative research approaches, and health & well-being in older adults. Dr. Mitchell has contributed to numerous significant studies including CALM (dental anxiety in children), FARSTER-Care (cardiac rehabilitation), PROFHER-2 (shoulder fracture treatments), REDUCE (diabetic foot ulcers), CASPER (depression in older adults), and STEPFORWARD (prosthetic devices for amputations).
Analysis of her publication history reveals expertise spanning clinical trial methodology, geriatric interventions, mental health services research, and rehabilitation studies. Her recent work (2021-2024) shows particular emphasis on mobility interventions for older adults, cardiac rehabilitation pathways, and methodological improvements in trial design and implementation.
Dr. Mitchell has successfully contributed to grant applications submitted to major funding bodies including NIHR RfPB, NIHR HTA, and NIHR EME. She maintains extensive experience in Patient & Public Involvement activities at both grant development and implementation stages.
Her collaborative approach is evident through numerous co-authorships across disciplines, with recent projects involving international teams across multiple UK institutions. Dr. Mitchell's methodological rigor has been instrumental in the successful execution of complex clinical trials across diverse health conditions.
