Natascia Tiso is an Associate Professor in Applied Biology at the Department of Biology, University of Padova, Italy. She leads the Tiso Lab, which focuses on developmental genetics and disease modeling using zebrafish. Her research spans neural, cardiac, pancreatic, thyroidal, and mitochondrial systems, employing cutting-edge techniques such as CRISPR/Cas9, morpholino microinjection, and transgenic reporter lines.
Her educational background includes a first-class honors degree in Biological Sciences (1994) and a PhD in Genetics (1998) from the University of Padova. She completed postdoctoral training at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto and the Max Planck Institute in Tübingen.
- Graduated: Biological Sciences, University of Padova (1994)
- PhD: Genetics, Universities of Bologna, Ferrara, Padova (1998)
- Postdoctoral Fellow: Hospital for Sick Children, Toronto (1997)
- EU-Screen Fellow: Max Planck Institute, Tübingen (2005)
Her research interests include developmental genetics, signaling pathways, mitochondrial disorders, and human disease gene mapping. She initially worked on identifying the RYR2 gene responsible for arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy (ARVD2) and has transitioned to zebrafish-based functional studies.
Recent publications (2023–2025) highlight her work in disease modeling, including studies on POLG disorders, arrhythmogenic cardiomyopathy, hypoxia response, and neurodegenerative conditions. Her research integrates molecular biology, genetics, and translational approaches to understand disease mechanisms.
She mentors several post-doctoral researchers and graduate students in her lab, fostering a collaborative research environment. Her lab also collaborates on cancer models, stem cell therapies, and signaling pathway analyses.
Dr. Tiso has secured EU research contracts and continues to publish in high-impact journals. Her lab is equipped for advanced genetic and molecular studies in zebrafish, contributing significantly to developmental and disease biology.
