Natalie M. Mahowald is the Irving Porter Church Professor in Engineering and Chair of the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences at Cornell University. She holds affiliations with multiple graduate fields including Atmospheric Science, Civil Engineering, Geological Sciences, and Physics. Her research focuses on Earth system feedbacks affecting climate change, particularly atmospheric transport of biogeochemical species like desert dust and carbon cycles.
Dr. Mahowald employs 3D global transport models combined with satellite data analysis to study regional and global climate dynamics. Her work bridges atmospheric chemistry, biogeochemistry, and climate modeling to address critical environmental challenges.
Her publications demonstrate a consistent focus on aerosols, land-use impacts, and carbon cycling, with recent work emphasizing human influences on climate systems. Award highlights include fellowship distinctions from AAAS, AGU, and the Guggenheim Foundation, along with leadership roles in IPCC assessments.
- AAAS Fellow (2020)
- Research Excellence Award (2019)
- IPCC Lead Author (2018)
- Guggenheim Fellowship (2013)
She leads the Mahowald Research Group investigating climate feedback mechanisms and advises on national climate policy initiatives.
