Natalia Waights Hickman is an Associate Professor of Philosophy and Tutorial Fellow at Worcester College, University of Oxford. She holds affiliations with the Department of Philosophy and has been a Junior Research Fellow at The Queen’s College and a Researcher at the Centre for the Study of Mind in Nature in Oslo. Her academic journey includes a DPhil from Oxford (2012–2016), an MA in Philosophy from the University of Reading (2010–2012), and a BA in PPE from Brasenose College, Oxford (2006–2009).
Her research focuses on philosophy of language, epistemology, and philosophy of action, with emphasis on linguistic knowledge, practical knowledge, and normativity. She explores connections between semantic understanding and skill-based knowledge, challenging traditional theory-practice divides. Her work engages deeply with Gilbert Ryle’s underappreciated ideas on thinking and improvisation, alongside Wittgensteinian themes.
Her teaching spans Knowledge and Reality, Philosophy of Logic and Language, Wittgenstein, Philosophy of Mind, Feminist Theory, and Ethics. She supervises BPhil students in philosophy of language, epistemology, and action, as well as historical figures like Ryle and Wittgenstein.
