Dr. Nasrollah Ghahramani holds the J. Lloyd Huck Chair in Medicine and serves as Professor and Interim Chair of the Department of Medicine at Penn State College of Medicine. He is also Chief of the Division of Nephrology, Vice Chair for Educational Affairs, Professor in the Department of Public Health Sciences, and Medical Director of the Kidney Transplant Program.
His educational background includes an MD from Iran University of Medical Sciences (1984), a BA in Natural Sciences from the University of Pennsylvania (1976), and an MS in Clinical Research from Penn State College of Medicine (2006). He has completed professional development programs from Harvard Macy Institute, Stanford University, and Penn State Smeal College of Business.
Dr. Ghahramani's research focuses on patient-centered studies in nephrology, particularly peer mentoring for chronic kidney disease patients, transplant perceptions, and geographic disparities in transplant access. His work also addresses acute kidney injury, kidney transplantation, and graft survival monitoring. He completed NIH-sponsored K-30 clinical research training and led a PCORI-funded study on peer-led mentoring programs for kidney disease patients.
His recent publications demonstrate expertise in kidney disease management, transplantation, and healthcare disparities, including studies on aortic valve calcium as a kidney function risk marker, lupus nephritis management with social considerations, optimal dialysis timing, renal replacement therapy outcomes, and machine learning approaches to predict kidney disease progression post-COVID-19.

As an educator, Dr. Ghahramani mentors medical students, residents, fellows, and junior faculty. He serves on the Department of Medicine Residency Program Curriculum Committee and chairs both the Clinical Competency Committee and Department of Medicine Educational Council. His leadership extends to directing the kidney transplant program and leading global health initiatives in Croatia.
