Naseema Merchant is an Associate Professor of Medicine in the Section of General Internal Medicine at Yale School of Medicine and a core faculty member in the Traditional Internal Medicine Residency Program. She serves as Site Director and Program Director for the Chief Residency Program in Quality Improvement and Patient Safety (QIPS) at VA Connecticut Healthcare System, where she also holds the role of Physician Lead for High Reliability Organization. She co-leads the Distinction Pathway in QIPS and Leadership and serves as Associate Director for Health Equity within the GME Distinction Pathway. Her work bridges clinical practice, medical education, and systems improvement.

Dr. Merchant completed her MBBS at Aga Khan University, Pakistan, followed by residency in Internal Medicine at the University of Illinois at Chicago. She pursued fellowship training in Pulmonary & Critical Care Medicine and Medical Education at Yale School of Medicine. She holds formal training in Lean Six Sigma (Yellow Belt), IHI methodologies, Organizational Change Management, and is a Master Trainer in High Reliability in Healthcare and Clinical Team Training.
Her research and clinical interests focus on advancing high reliability, fostering just culture, promoting organizational safety, and enhancing interprofessional learning in quality improvement and patient safety. She has delivered presentations and led initiatives at local, regional, and national levels. Her publications span topics such as morbidity and mortality conferences, real-time feedback systems, resident QI curricula, and palliative care integration in heart failure.
Recent publications demonstrate a strong trend in developing innovative educational and operational models to improve patient safety, enhance resident engagement in QI, and institutionalize safety culture. Her work emphasizes experiential learning, structured feedback, and system-level interventions to improve healthcare quality.

Dr. Merchant mentors residents and leads longitudinal, mentored quality improvement curricula. She has been instrumental in developing safety awards programs and institutional initiatives to recognize and reinforce safe practices. Her leadership extends to national professional organizations, including the Society of Hospital Medicine and the American College of Physicians, where she contributes to educational and quality improvement committees.
She is actively involved in interprofessional teams focused on patient safety, high reliability, and quality improvement at both Yale and the VA Connecticut Healthcare System. Her work is supported by collaborations with key figures in medical education and patient safety, including Craig Gunderson, Shaili Gupta, and Benjamin Rodwin.
