Naomi Hossain is a Research Professor at the Accountability Research Center within the School of International Service at American University, and a Senior Research Fellow at the Institute of Development Studies at the University of Sussex. She holds a DPhil in Development Studies from the University of Sussex, an MSc in Social Anthropology from the London School of Economics, and a BA in Philosophy, Politics & Economics from the University of Oxford.
Her research focuses on the politics of development, particularly how marginalized communities access public services. She examines accountability mechanisms in crises such as natural disasters, industrial accidents, and economic shocks, emphasizing the role of protest in holding institutions accountable. Her work spans Bangladesh and over 20 countries across Asia, Africa, Latin America, and Europe.
Dr. Hossain advises multilateral agencies, governments, NGOs, and research institutions, and has authored influential books such as The Politics of Education in Developing Countries (2019) and Food Riots, Food Rights, and the Politics of Provisions (2017). She previously worked at BRAC in Bangladesh and continues to lead research at the Accountability Research Center, a global think-tank dedicated to empowering marginalized voices in governance.
