Dr. Naomi Haynes is a Senior Lecturer and Chancellor's Fellow at the University of Edinburgh, affiliated with the School of Social and Political Science. Her work bridges political economy and religious studies with a focus on Christianity in Zambia.
Research Interests: As a leading scholar in the anthropology of Christianity, Haynes investigates how religious concepts like prosperity gospel and Christian nationalism intersect with social structures and economic systems. Her research spans hierarchy, values, and the political theology of Pentecostalism, particularly in Southern Africa.
Recent Publications: Her 2025 monograph A Divine Season examines Zambian Christian nationalist activism. Earlier works, like Moving by the Spirit (2017), analyze Pentecostal social dynamics on the Zambian Copperbelt. Current projects explore state-religion interactions and the politics of Christian nationhood.
