Anthony Simpson is an Honorary Research Fellow in Social Anthropology at the University of Manchester. His career includes roles as Temporary Lecturer (1998-2001), Lecturer (2004-2014), and Senior Lecturer (2014 onwards). He holds a PhD in Social Anthropology from the University of Manchester (1996). His research focuses on medical anthropology, HIV/AIDS in Sub-Saharan Africa, and the intersection of masculinity, religion, and healthcare. He has conducted extensive fieldwork in Zambia, including a 20-year teaching tenure at a mission school.
Key research interests include:
- Gendered responses to HIV/AIDS
- Christian identity and health behaviors
- Colonial educational legacies
- Ageing masculinities and religious ideas
He currently serves as editor of the Journal of Southern African Studies and has authored two books: Half-London in Zambia (ethnography of mission schooling) and Boys to Men in the Shadow of AIDS (masculinities and HIV/AIDS).
Recent work explores ageing masculinities and religious frameworks in HIV/AIDS contexts. His ESRC Research Fellowship (2002) supported studies on masculinities and HIV/AIDS in Zambia.
