Naoko HOSOKAWA is a postdoctoral researcher at Tokyo College, University of Tokyo. Previously, she worked at the University of Strasbourg (ATER) and the European University Institute in Florence (Max Weber Fellow). Her research focuses on language and identity, multilingualism, and language education. She holds a DPhil in Oriental Studies from the University of Oxford, an MSc in International Relations from the London School of Economics, an MA in Political Science from Columbia University, and a BA in Political Management from Keio University.
Her work explores the intersection of language, cultural identity, and globalization, with notable publications analyzing loanwords in Japanese identity and discourse in Japanese media. Since 2017, she has been an associated researcher of Axis 2 of the Fondation France-Japon (FFJ), focusing on sociopolitical and cultural transitions in Asia and Africa. In 2016, she published a research statement on language and national identity in contemporary Japan during her FFJ fellowship at the EHESS.
