Naoki Masuda

Naoki Masuda is Professor and Director of Graduate Studies in the Department of Mathematics at the State University of New York at Buffalo, with additional affiliations at the Institute for Artificial Intelligence and Data Science. He holds a PhD from the University of Tokyo. His primary research focuses on network science and mathematical biology, specifically examining dynamical processes on networks, temporal networks, and interdisciplinary applications in gene networks, brain networks, and collective animal behavior.

Research interests include temporal network analysis, epidemic processes on networks, behavioral biology, energy landscape analysis in neuroscience, and cooperation evolution. His work develops algorithmic and statistical tools for analyzing time-varying network data and mathematical models for understanding contagion processes and neural dynamics. Current projects investigate random walks on networks, concurrency in epidemic spreading, and collective intelligence in animal groups.

Dr. Masuda has received the JSPS Prize 2020 for his contributions to network science. His publications demonstrate strong interdisciplinary collaboration, with recent work appearing in Physical Review Letters, Nature Communications, and Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. He actively mentors students and postdoctoral researchers in complex network analysis and mathematical biology.

Laboratory resources include computational tools for network analysis (NetworkX), energy landscape modeling (MATLAB), and temporal network visualization. The research group maintains collaborations with international institutions including Tampere University and RIKEN Center for Brain Science.
