Nandagopal R. Menon is a researcher and academic affiliated with the Cluster of Excellence "Religion and Politics" at the University of Münster. He holds a PhD in cultural anthropology from Utrecht University (2015) and has held positions at the Universities of Göttingen and Leiden. Currently, he leads the project C3-26: "Polemics, Apologetics and Conversion: A Diachronic Study of Religious Change" within the Cluster. His work focuses on the anthropology of religion, media, and death, with a regional specialization in South Asia, particularly Kerala.
Menon’s research examines intersections between religion, secularism, and state power, including studies on intra-Muslim polemics, communal harmony as state strategy, and the role of death rituals in religious conversion. He has published extensively in academic journals such as Modern Asian Studies and History of Religions, and authored a book on intra-Muslim polemics in South India. His earlier career included a decade as a journalist specializing in religious affairs in India.
Key research themes include secularism’s impact on religious practices, media’s role in shaping religious discourse, and the socio-political dimensions of religious identity. His work bridges ethnographic fieldwork with archival research, particularly in analyzing how religious polemics reflect broader state and societal dynamics.
Despite his prolific output, Menon has not been explicitly linked to formal teaching roles or student advisement in the provided materials. His contributions to public intellectual discourse include writing for outlets like Economic and Political Weekly and Scroll, emphasizing engagement with broader audiences beyond academia.
