Nancy Sherman is a Distinguished University Professor and Professor of Philosophy at Georgetown University, with an affiliate appointment at Georgetown Law’s Center on National Security and the Law. She has taught at Georgetown since 1989 and previously held roles at Yale University and the U.S. Naval Academy. Her expertise spans ethics, Greco-Roman philosophy, military ethics, and moral psychology.
Education: B.A. magna cum laude from Bryn Mawr College, Ph.D. from Harvard University (awarded the George Plympton Adam Prize), and M.Litt. from the University of Edinburgh.
Research focuses on military ethics, moral injury, and the intersection of ancient philosophy with modern resilience. She has advised the Department of Defense, Veterans Administration, and authored influential books such as Stoic Wisdom and Afterwar.
Notable awards include election to the American Academy of Arts & Sciences and fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation and the American Philosophical Society. She contributes to media, including the New York Times and podcasts, and has delivered over 60 keynote lectures globally.
Her advisory work includes suicide prevention strategies and moral injury research for the Army, Marine Corps, and VA. She co-founded the Stockdale Center for Ethical Leadership and participated in Guantanamo Bay assessments.
