Nancy Kwak is an Associate Professor in the History Department and Urban Studies & Planning Department at the University of California San Diego. She holds a non-resident fellowship at Carnegie California and previously served as President of the Society for American City and Regional Planning History. Her research focuses on urban development, housing policy, and global urban informality.
Education: BA in History from UC Berkeley, MAT from Harvard Graduate School of Education, and PhD in History from Columbia University (2006).
Research interests include housing affordability, gentrification, transnational urban planning, and agriculture-food systems in Southern California. She is currently finalizing a comparative study of global urban informality.
Publications emphasize the intersection of urban policy and democracy, as seen in her 2024 commentary linking California's housing crisis to democratic health.
