Nancy Jo Pokrywka is Professor and Chair of Biology at Vassar College, where she has taught since 1994. She earned her BS from Stonehill College and MS/PhD from the University of Rochester. Her research examines cellular organization using Drosophila oogenesis as a model system.
Her research focuses on cytoskeletal regulation and subcellular organization, particularly how cytoskeletal reorganization enables asymmetrical distribution of RNAs and proteins in developing cells. She employs genetic, cell biological, and imaging approaches including antibody staining, confocal microscopy, and computational image analysis to study these processes.
Pokrywka's publications reveal specialization in cell polarity mechanisms, cytoskeletal organization, and developmental genetics. Recent work explores molecular pathways in oocyte development and specialized imaging techniques.
She teaches courses including a Senior Thesis seminar in Science, Technology and Society.
