Naftali Cohn is a Professor and Chair of the Religions and Cultures department at Concordia University. His research focuses on Jewish ritual in antiquity, particularly in the Mishnah, exploring intersections between ritual, narrative, memory, and gender. His current projects include a SSHRC-funded study on Jewish ritual in modern media and pedagogical work integrating Equity, Diversity, and Decolonization principles into religious studies education.
Research interests span ritual theory, affect theory, feminist theory, and Rabbinic literature. He investigates how ancient texts like the Mishnah construct identity through ritual practices and legal frameworks. Recent work emphasizes ritual failure/success dynamics and spatial concepts in sacred spaces.
His publications (2008–2024) analyze Temple rituals, gender norms, and heresiological discourse in the Mishnah. Projects bridge ancient and modern contexts, including cinematic representations of Jewish rituals. He actively contributes to interdisciplinary dialogues on religion, memory, and identity formation.
