Nafeesa Muhammad is an Associate Professor in the Department of History at Spelman College, where she has been a faculty member since 2014. Her research focuses on 19th and 20th-century African American history, transnationalism, and Black nationalism, with a specialization in the economic activities of the Nation of Islam (NOI).

Dr. Muhammad’s work bridges United States history, African Diasporic studies, and social justice frameworks. She explores the NOI’s transnational ties and economic strategies, alongside broader themes of Black nationalism and community development. Her publications address the intersection of academia and social responsibility in Africana Studies.
In her most recent article, "Forging Heaven: The Nation of Islam’s Transnational Connection in the Creation of its Economic Program, 1950-1975", she analyzes the NOI’s global influences on economic initiatives. The 2010 chapter "Town and Gown: Reaffirming Social Responsibility in Africana Studies" underscores her commitment to ethical scholarship and community engagement.
