Nadja Klopprogge's research focuses on the intersection of race, gender, and the history of capitalism, with particular attention to African American-German relations from 1933 to 1990. Her work examines intimate relations as sites connecting African American and German history, exploring topics such as anti-miscegenation laws, forced sterilization, casual sexual encounters, marriage, and friendships. She investigates the role of motherhood in racial capitalism and the "Ghetto economy," situating these within broader global contexts. Her current projects include "Black Capitalism | Racial Capitalism," "Encyclopaedia Africana," and continuing work on "Intimate Histories."
Her publications demonstrate a consistent focus on transnational perspectives on race, gender, and political history, particularly examining African American experiences in Germany during the Cold War era and exploring how intimate relationships crossed racial and political boundaries. Her work bridges American studies, German history, and critical race theory, offering new perspectives on the socio-economic shifts in the history of capitalism.
Her notable scientific achievement includes:
- Best Article Award of the German Association of American Studies
As an educator, Klopprogge has taught a wide range of courses on Black history, race relations, and American history, including "Black Marxism und Black Capitalism im 19. und 20. Jahrhundert," "Jim Crow: Eine Geschichte der Segregation in den USA," and "Mama's Baby – Papa's Maybe" History and Theory of Motherhood in Modernity. Her teaching reflects her research interests, emphasizing the connections between race, gender, and economic systems throughout American history.
Klopprogge's research methodology involves examining intimate relations as historical sites that reveal broader political and social structures, using archival materials including photographs to reconstruct transnational connections between African Americans and Germans across the 20th century.
