Dr. Shennette Garrett-Scott is Associate Professor of History and Africana Studies and holds the Paul and Debra Gibbons Professorship at Tulane University's School of Liberal Arts. A leading expert in Black business history, her research examines African American women's economic agency, racial capitalism, and financial activism.
Research focuses on:
- African American women in finance and entrepreneurship
- Historical development of Black financial institutions
- Racial capitalism and economic justice movements
- Reconstruction-era economic strategies
Award-winning publications include 'Banking on Freedom', which received best book prizes from the Southern Historical Association, Association of Black Women Historians, and Organization of American Historians. Her work has been featured in academic journals as well as Time and Financial History magazines.
Current book project 'Black Enterprise: How Racial Capitalism Made America' is under contract with W.W. Norton. Teaches courses on African American women's history and modern African American political economy. Frequently presents research at national conferences and public history forums.
