Nadine Hubbs is a Professor of Women’s and Gender Studies and Music at the University of Michigan, affiliated with American Culture and serving as Director of the Lesbian-Gay-Queer Research Initiative (LGQRI). She holds a Ph.D. in Music (Theory) from the University of Michigan. Her work bridges musicology, cultural history, and queer studies, focusing on gender, LGBTQ+ issues, and class dynamics in U.S. music from classical to popular genres.
Research interests include 20th–21st century U.S. culture, social class in music, and the intersections of gender, sexuality, and music. She authored award-winning books like The Queer Composition of America’s Sound (2004) and Rednecks, Queers, and Country Music (2014), and co-edited Uncharted Country: New Voices in Country Music Studies (2020). Her work has been featured in New York Times, NPR, and international media.
Key publications include critiques of country music’s cultural politics, analyses of composers like Copland and Bernstein, and explorations of disco, Morrissey, and Radiohead. Hubbs challenges stereotypes about class and sexuality through musicological and sociological lenses, emphasizing marginalized voices and cross-marginal solidarity.
Awards include the Ruth A. Solie Award (2021) for Uncharted Country and recognition for her essays on Freddy Fender and queer vaquero culture. She collaborates with musicians and scholars globally, advocating for inclusive music studies.
