Nadia Urbinati is the Kyriakos Tsakopoulos Professor of Political Theory at Columbia University's Department of Political Science. She holds a PhD from the European University Institute (1989) and has held visiting roles at institutions such as Princeton University and Scuola Superiore Sant'Anna in Italy. Her research focuses on democratic theory, populism, and modern political thought. Key works include Me the People (2019) analyzing populism's impact on democracy and The Tyranny of the Moderns (2015), exploring Enlightenment-era political philosophy.
Urbinati's academic contributions include co-editing Constellations journal and serving on boards like the Feltrinelli Foundation. Awards include the 2008 Lenfest/Columbia Distinguished Faculty Award and Italy's Commendatore della Repubblica honor. She has taught courses on postwar democratic theory, modern political thought, and political representation at Columbia.
Her scholarship bridges historical analysis with contemporary challenges, addressing issues like democratic disfigurement, representative institutions, and the tension between majority rule and minority rights.
