Dr. Nadia Hasan is an Assistant Professor at the School of Gender, Sexuality and Women's Studies, York University. Her work focuses on systemic racism, Islamophobia, and their intersection with legal and administrative policies. She co-directs SSHRC-funded projects analyzing systemic Islamophobia and led studies on Bill 21's impact on Quebec Muslim women and CRA audits targeting Muslim-led charities. Dr. Hasan holds a PhD in Political Science from York University, alongside an MA and BA in Political Science and International Relations/Economics from York and the University of Toronto, respectively.
Her research explores diasporic religious practices, gender nationalism in Pakistan, and South Asian diasporas. She has directed community advocacy campaigns against Islamophobia and served as Chief Operating Officer of the National Council of Canadian Muslims (2018–2023). She currently chairs research capacity-building initiatives in Islamophobia studies at York University. Dr. Hasan also serves on the Board of the Canadian Mental Health Association Peel-Dufferin.
Her scholarly contributions include the book Muslim Model Minorities and the Politics of Diasporic Piety, which rethinks feminist frameworks for diasporic religious praxis. She frequently comments on Islamophobia in media, appearing on CBC, CTV, and major newspapers. Grants include SSHRC and WAGE-funded projects. Her work bridges academic research with grassroots activism against systemic racism and hate.
