Mónica Bolufer Peruga is a Full-time Professor at the European University Institute's Department of History, specializing in Early Modern History (1500-1800) with a focus on gender, cultural transfers, and the Spanish world in global context. She previously held a professorship at the University of Valencia (2017-2024) and led the ERC project CIRGEN: Circulating Gender in the Global Enlightenment (2019-2024). Her visiting professorships include École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales, Université de Toulouse 2-Jean Jaurès, University of Cambridge, Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, and Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú.
Her research explores the role of emotions and gender in empire-building and dissolution, using transnational/transatlantic correspondence and fiction. Secondary projects examine connections between 18th-century Italian and Spanish women intellectuals and female egodocuments for studying maternal authority and cosmopolitanism. Key publications include award-winning monographs like Arte y artificio de la vida en común and co-edited volumes such as The Routledge Companion to the Hispanic Enlightenment.
