Mário de Sousa is an Assistant Professor in the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department at the University of Porto, Portugal. He graduated with a Ph.D. in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the same institution in 2005. His teaching focuses on Industrial Informatics, Industrial Networks, and Real-Time Embedded Systems.
Dr. Sousa's research interests center on real-time embedded systems, communication protocols, and programming languages for industrial applications. He is the original author and maintainer of the Matiec open-source compiler for IEC 61131-3 PLC programming languages.
His recent publications demonstrate a consistent focus on edge computing, IoT security, and distributed systems. The research trends indicate emerging interests in Industry 5.0 applications and machine learning approaches for cybersecurity.
He has served in significant conference leadership roles including General Chair and Track Chair for the IEEE International Conference on Industrial Informatics (2018, 2019).
