Myriam Brochu is a Full Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Polytechnique Montréal, where she holds a Tier 2 Canada Research Chair in Fatigue Damage of Advanced Metallic Materials. She serves as Institutional Coordinator of the Aluminum Research Center (REGAL) and is a Member of the Institute of Biomedical Engineering. Her expertise spans materials science, mechanical engineering, and structural integrity with critical applications in aerospace, automotive, and energy sectors.
Dr. Brochu's research focuses on the microstructure, mechanical behavior, and damage mechanisms of metallic materials. Her work centers on developing predictive models for fatigue life and fatigue-corrosion interactions, incorporating manufacturing conditions and microstructural characteristics. She primarily investigates aluminum alloys, high-strength steels, titanium alloys, and nickel superalloys, while also conducting failure analyses to determine root causes of structural component failures.
Her key research interests include:
- Fatigue and corrosion damage mechanisms
- Prediction of mechanical performance
- Failure and fracture analysis
- Microstructure-mechanical behavior relationships
- Manufacture of critical structural components
- Advanced metals characterization
- Hydrogen embrittlement phenomena
Analysis of her recent publications reveals a strong emphasis on additive manufacturing techniques, particularly laser powder bed fusion, and their impact on material properties and fatigue behavior. Her research bridges traditional metallurgy with modern manufacturing processes, with special attention to how microstructural features influence fatigue performance under various loading conditions and environments.
Dr. Brochu has been awarded a prestigious Tier 2 Canada Research Chair in Fatigue Damage of Advanced Metallic Materials, recognizing her leadership in the field and providing significant research support.
She maintains an active supervision record with 5 PhD students currently in progress and has successfully guided 9 PhD graduates and 18 Master's students. Her students' research aligns closely with her expertise, focusing on fatigue behavior, microstructure-property relationships, and failure analysis of metallic materials across various industries.
Dr. Brochu is affiliated with multiple research centers including the Aluminum Research Center (REGAL) where she serves as Institutional Coordinator, and the Institute of Biomedical Engineering. Her work significantly contributes to Polytechnique Montréal's strategic priorities in innovative materials and sustainable infrastructure development.
