Myra Mimlitsch-Gray is a Professor in the Art Department at SUNY New Paltz, specializing in metalsmithing and contemporary craft. She holds an MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art (1986) and a BFA from Philadelphia College of Art (1984). Her research explores the intersection of craft history, materiality, and utilitarian form, particularly through metalsmithing and porcelain enamel on steel. She has conducted workshops and lectures globally at institutions like Konstfack University (Stockholm), Royal College of Art (London), and Alchimia School (Florence).
Notable exhibitions include In/Animate: Recent Work (Samuel Dorsky Museum, 2016) and Staging Form (Metal Museum, 2014). Her work is featured in major collections such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Victoria and Albert Museum, and Smithsonian Institution. Mimlitsch-Gray has received prestigious awards including the United States Artists Fellowship and SUNY Chancellor's Awards for both scholarship and teaching.
Her creative practice emphasizes material transformation and historical dialogue, with recent works investigating porcelain enamel techniques and baroque-inspired forms. She has participated in residencies like the John Michael Kohler Arts Center's Arts/Industry program, producing process-driven sculptures and reinterpreted cast iron cookware.
