Myles Osborne is an Associate Professor of History at the University of Colorado Boulder, specializing in modern African history, colonialism, and empire. His research focuses on African responses to colonial systems, particularly in Kenya, and the intersection of ethnicity, soldiering, and loyalty under British colonial rule. He teaches courses such as 'Introduction to African History,' 'History of Southern Africa,' and 'Africa Under Colonial Rule,' and directs the undergraduate history honors program.
Osborne holds a Ph.D. from Harvard University (2008) and undergraduate degrees from Columbia University and the University of Oxford. His publications include *Ethnicity and Empire in Kenya: Loyalty and Martial Race among the Kamba, c. 1800 to the Present* (Cambridge, 2014), co-authored *Africans and Britons in the Age of Empires, 1660–1980* (Routledge, 2015), and edited *The Life and Times of General China: Mau Mau and the End of Empire in Kenya* (Marcus Wiener, 2015). His work has been supported by grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities and the American Philosophical Society.
Osborne’s recent research explores post-WWII connections between Africa and the Caribbean. He has held fellowships at Harvard’s Hutchins Center and is a recipient of teaching excellence awards, reflecting his dedication to both scholarship and education.
